malaysia dinner: 9th June 2012 at Jaya palace in petaling Jaya

wedding cake

from wikipedia wrt symbolism of wedding cake...

"The wedding cake is a tradition that began back in the Roman Empire. At the time, it was a loaf of bread that the groom broke over the bride's head as a symbol of his dominance in the marriage and over her. The color of the cake is typically white to symbolize purity. The action of the bride and groom cutting the cake is meant to symbolize their first joint task in married life. The gesture of feeding cake to one another is a symbol of the commitment the bride and groom are making."

the first time we met?

up at Mount Kosciuszko when a trip was organised by a mutual friend in easter 2009

the engagement ring

we were talking about his sister's wedding in his room. he then thought it was the right timing. so he got out the ring, went down on 1 knee and asked, 'will you marry me?'
'hmm, but you haven't asked my mum!' i replied, blushing and shaking my head.

'do i have your permission to ask your mum?' he deftly changed the question.

i nodded.

so we made a trip to 'meet the parents' in april. i met his parents and family in malaysia. he then came to singapore to meet my mum and family. at the end of the trip, he asked my mum for her permission.

'will you marry me?' he asks again in my room.

'ok' i replied, and responding to his frown, i said 'i do' (apparently ok isn't formal enough) :p

if dates are important, that was 1st may 2011

amateur wedding planner

i think i'm turning this into a wedding blog for a while. sorry, super cheesy material for a blog! now that exams are over, we can focus on this part of our lives.

we've decided to do this in a few parts:

1. wedding registration in melbourne (tentatively dec 2011)

2. KL chinese dinner banquet

3. ?singapore dinner.

Singapore General Election 2011

we are excited about politics. i think this election has made clear that there are young singaporeans out there who are willing to step up and say, 'pick me, because i want to make a change too.' thank you to these singaporeans who have dared to take this first step. such a step inspires us all.

are we ready for change? maybe. we are still very hesitant. we are persuaded to conform so easily. so even if we didn't manage to effect change this time, we would like these individuals and alternative parties to continue to play a role in shaping singapore's future. because, if we realise that these opposition party candidates are in it for the long haul, no matter trials and tribulations, then we are more likely to vote for them the next time. so do stick around.

national building has always been a trial and error process. no one can say for sure if they were going to do better than the other party. instead of all of us complaining about certain issues and topics that bother us, let's get onto the process of changing the situation.

positive change

again from SZ's blog: there is a small population of people who are very keen to make change happen around them. positive change. this is one of them. good work!

part 1 written exam passed

1 hurdle overcomed.

there is this lull. i think it's the disbelief that i had passed. and the realisation that i need to start preparing for the clinicals. the empty steam engine that hadn't had time to refuel before it has to chug on along again. so i'm in denial. still. by now, i've heard it all, 'THE CLINICAL EXAM IS WORSE THAN THE WRITTEN!'

so today i adamently rejected medicine, i think, in my subconscious fashion. refused to do anything clinical. refused to go to my tutorial. not sure why i won't budge. but just refused.

after a period of contemplation, i think i've come down to the root of it. i hate clinical medicine. it's always the academic side of things that fascinate me. i hate being put through this process where i get gruelled and criticised and whipped into shape to be ready for this clinical exam. i hate having to think about topics that i've got no interest in, but have to be apt in them because they are 'common' or 'important' topics.

pulled out small bits of medicine that i used to be interested in. that neurology video w Prof on it examining that LMN pattern in the upper limb. oh yes. i am still interested in that. looked at dr wikipedia and found about tetany and botulinism. oh. there are still bits of medicine that i'm interested in. it might not be that particular murmur or that particular splenomegaly or that rheumatoid hands.

but this is the process that i've to go through before i can just focus on one aspect of medicine. it can be interesting. it can be fun. but it'll also be hard and painful. hopefully when i'm in the pits of my agony of exam preparation, i'll remember this moment of aspiration and hold on to it and allow me to be able to do the next part.

exams on the 28th feb

coming soon...
needed so many pep talks to keep me going.
i've done the basics, tried my best, what's left is to go in and do the exam w a positive mind.
i guess alot of the time we don't see the hard work behind all this.

the sportsperson who wins the game would have had so many hours of practice and perspiration.
the chef who wins a prize for his best dish would have had so many failed dishes.
the noble prize peacemaker would have had so many frustrating negotiations.
the scientist w a winning invention would have had so many failed gadgets and ideas.

the 99% perspiration and 1% brilliance behind all these achievements...
good luck everybody!
